Mexico’s War

“The disappearance of Diego Fernández de Cevallos, a power broker and friend of Mr. Calderón who ran for president in 1994, comes amid a spike in drug-related killings, which approach 23,000 since Mr. Calderón began his drug war in 2006.

Mr. Calderón will almost certainly remind Congress that the American public’s demand for illicit drugs and the many American guns smuggled across the border into Mexico fuel the violence gripping his country” (emphasis added).
